Out of the Gene Pool is a comic strip mired in Middletown, USA, with all the idiosyncrasies and idiots that are found in every community. Middletown has its share of weirdos and freaks, folks who are human and those just barely into the primate class.

Stuck right in the middle of town is Rufus, a blue-collar lovable goof who adores his wife and kid. While Rufus doesn’t look like much, beneath the tattered tee lies a heart of gold and a soft spot for Middletown's losing sports teams. Rufus' wife, Andy, has learned to be patient with both her intellectually challenged husband and their inquisitive son, Miller. Andy's best friend, Jackie, may be shallow, but she has an inspiring ability to juggle work and single-motherhood. Although her son, Travis, spends a lot of time just being a kid with Miller, he's also working hard to make his first million before he's 12. He might achieve that goal before Andy's younger brother, Sam, can make enough cash to live on his own. A twenty-something bachelor who was drawn to Middletown for its close proximity to free meals, Sam enlisted the help of Zoogie, his old college roommate, to help pay the rent. A furry frat-boy at heart, Zoogie might look cute and cuddly, but his personality is not. Finally, there's Madame Red, Middletown's modern day wicked witch. You either love her or hate her, but you can be sure of one thing: She hates you. End of discussion.
